Located off the South East corner of Mafia Island lies the green jewel in the archipelagos crown. Chole island. A lush tropical Island measuring just 1sq Kilometer it is the perfect Island Get away.
Imagine Tarzan meets Out of Africa and it nearly conjures up an image of this tropical paradise that Anne and Jean have created.
With only seven treehouses, carefully placed and designed, privacy is assured. Open to the elements, with the king-size bed the throne-like centre piece, each thatched platform is reached via sandy paths that lead through the natural vegetation. All have views of the sea; some are close enough to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the tide trickling back through the mangrove roots. Most treehouses have a second level to accommodate children.
The attention to detail from the excellent staff, who outnumber guests three to one, is amazing.
It is the perfect location for the ultimate honeymoon and you can dine privately under the stars or with other guests if you prefer.
It is an ideal destination for children above the age of five allowing them to disconnect from civilizations screen distractions and to be how children used to be…Explorers and adventurers, curious to the tropical island they are visiting!
Chole Mjini Tree Houses
You may have watched the sun set and the moon rise from the Red Herring Cafe or the Hanashi, rooftop, bar or just come in from a sunset sail and soon it’s time for a candle-lit dinner under the stars. Each evening sees a different setting. Our guests can choose to dine at the dinner-party table or on their own in a romantic location. The table may be set within the age old ruins, the crumbling walls clasped by fig tree roots like giant fingers in the flickering candlelight, on the jetty, next to the murmuring ocean, or under the magnificent Tamarind tree, on the beach or a surprise spot in the gardens.
A strong Swahili-Indian influence, known for it’s judicious use of coconut milk, adds subtle but distinctively flavourful spicing to our international cuisine. Our speciality is sea food, freshly caught and delivered daily. We compliment this with lots of salads and fresh vegetables and we are happy to cater for gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian diets. We never serve pork and other meats and chicken are offered infrequently.

ACTIVITIES:
Not that I recommend doing too many as being at Chole Mjini is PURE holiday relaxation.
But as you are staying in the largest Marine National Park in the Indian Ocean it would be a shame not to experience the stunning Under Water World.
For the keen scuba divers and snorkellers the waters of Chole Bay are easily accessed by the excellent 5* Padi Mafia Island Divers based opposite Chole Mjini at Utende. For beginners they also host introduction courses as well as the PADI certificate.
If visiting Mafia from October to March it is a must do to snorkel with The Whale Sharks off The West Coast off the Island. A highly recommended unforgettable experience.
Guests can also visit the nearby Blue Lagoon, stroll the safe and beautiful Chole Island, visit the boat building yard and Chole village, take a sailboat to watch the sun set or to visit a sandbank or rent a stand up paddle board.
Getting There:
It’s a short Cessna Caravan flight from the capital, Dar Es Salaam, followed by a drive across the charming island of Mafia, to your boat, tethered on a sandy beach, the forested island of Chole clearly visible across the azure waters. There are regular flights to Mafia from virtually everywhere in Tanzania; flight time from Dar Es Salaam is around 30 minutes (45 from Zanzibar or Selous).

April & May Chole Mjini is closed for the long rains.

Note that entry to the Mafia Island Marine Park is EXTRA and costs US$23.6 per person per day; you will need to prepay this amount on entering the Park. Payment can only be made by CREDIT CARD! Prices can fluctuate, so please check when booking.
