Nestled on the bay of one of the world’s ten most beautiful diving and snorkelling destinations, the resort is a tropical paradise, just a twenty minute boat ride from the colourful reefs.
Depending on the season Humpback whales, Whale sharks, turtles, dolphins and reef sharks can all be seen in Mafia’s waters.
Recently, the site underwent a complete transformation: twenty small rooms were replaced with ten spacious accommodations. A beautiful new freshwater swimming pool, an intimate spa, and a lively beach bar have been built, perfectly embodying the Basecamp atmosphere. Dutch management and a welcoming local staff.

The open-plan restaurant overlooks the azure Indian Ocean and serves fresh dishes daily, prepared with local, seasonal ingredients. The cuisine is a delightful mix of Tanzanian and international influences, with an emphasis on fresh fish and seafood sourced directly from the waters around Mafia Island. Think grilled octopus, lobster, or freshly caught tuna, complemented by tropical fruits and vegetables from the surrounding area.
In the new beach bar, you can enjoy refreshing cocktails, fresh fruit juices, and a selection of wines and local beers, the perfect place to relax as the sun sets over Chole Bay. On land, you can walk through tropical forests, along mangroves and deserted beaches, or birdwatch in their natural habitat. Visit traditional villages such as Utende or Kilindoni to learn about the Swahili culture and local fishing communities. Cycling or renting a scooter is an ideal way to explore the island at your own pace.
The property is uniquely situated within the Marine Park & Reserve. A mandatory Park Fee of USD 23.60 per person per night is payable directly at the entrance gate (Visa or Mastercard accepted). This contribution plays a vital role in preserving our extraordinary marine environment and in protecting one of the world’s most beautiful marine ecosystems. A 1% Tourism Development Levy is applied to the total net accommodation cost.
